our cause...
At Urban Math, our main contributions will support children suffering with cleft lip and palate, known as
one of the most common major birth defects. Every shirt that is purchased and worn will help contribute to surgeries needed to change the
lives of many children across the world.
What is cleft lip and palate? The word cleft means a gap or split between two things. A cleft
lip is a split in the upper lip. This can happen on one or two sides of the lip, creating a wider opening into the nose. A cleft palate is a split in the roof of the mouth. This leaves a hole between the nose and the mouth.
What happens to a kid who is born with this defect? A baby with cleft lip and cleft palate
may have difficulties that include feeding problems, middle ear fluid and hearing loss, dental problems, and speech problems.
What kind of treatment is needed? Treating cleft lip or cleft palate takes a team of different types of specialists (in this case, people who are experts in helping kids with clefts). Kids with cleft lip and palate will need several surgeries to fix the cleft. The cleft lip is usually repaired by the time the baby is between 3 to 6 months old. During surgery, the doctor closes the gap in the lip. A person who has cleft lip repaired as an infant will have a scar on the lip under the nose.
How many children are affected? 1 of every 1,000 babies born in the United States suffer from this birth defect. However, there are several million children worldwide who also need our help.
How much is a single surgery? There are larger organizations who specialize in operating on children with cleft lip and cleft palate for as little as $250 in 45 minutes a childs life can be changed.
How can I make a difference? Change adds up... By purchasing, wearing, and telling your friends about Urban Math apparel you become the change, that a child needs who is affected by cleft lip and palate. For each shirt purchased, Urban Math will donate a percentage of the profits to helping children getting the much needed surgeries they deserve.
